Director’s Message

In this issue of the Survey of Current Business, our Regional Quarterly Report takes a look at state gross domestic product (GDP) statistics for 2019. The report also discusses state personal income for 2019. Personal income growth slowed in every state except two. We also present personal consumption expenditures by state for 2019. These statistics reflect the results of the annual update of the Regional Economic Accounts and the National Income and Product Accounts (NIPAs).

Elsewhere, we present our annual guide to the methodologies and source data for the NIPAs, a valuable resource for all users of the statistics. And our monthly “GDP and the Economy” article discusses the advance estimates for the third quarter of 2020.

This month’s Survey centennial content features reprints of a January 1951 article on annual constant-dollar gross national product (GNP) and a December 1958 article on quarterly constant-dollar GNP, showcasing the evolution of this important measurement tool in the NIPAs. We also present an influencer profile on George Jaszi, a former BEA Director and a former Editor-in-Chief of the Survey, whose vision greatly impacted the development of GNP, national income and product accounting, and BEA as a whole.
