Director’s Message

This month in the Survey of Current Business, we highlight results of the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) 2019 Benchmark Survey of U.S. Direct Investment Abroad. Worldwide employment by U.S. multinational enterprises increased 2.4 percent in 2019 to 43.9 million workers, with employment in the United States by U.S. parents increasing 2.7 percent to 29.3 million workers and employment abroad by majority-owned foreign affiliates increasing 1.8 percent to 14.6 million workers.

Our “GDP and the Economy” article looks at the second estimate of gross domestic product for the third quarter of 2021, and a separate article discusses estimates of government receipts and expenditures, also for the third quarter.

As is typical each December, we provide a subject guide of articles that appeared in the Survey in 2021 and a BEA news release schedule for 2022.
